Highfire by Eoin Colfer
Everyone, take a second to ponder:
Have you ever thought to yourself, what if Dreamwork’s Shrek took place in Louisiana, and Shrek was a dragon, and Lord Farquaad was a middle aged veteran, and Donkey was a pubescent boy with nine fingers?
Ohhoho. I have news for you.
Eoin Colfer’s Highfire is…it’s…I’m sorry I can’t believe it but I literally told you the entire story in the headline. So, it’s honestly pretty charming. I’ve only read a small amount of Colfer’s young adult fiction, but I gather it retains a lot of the amusement.
Vern is a really likeable character (if you take out all of the objectifying of women that apparently characterizes the Southern United States.) He’s pretty three-dimensional in his “last living timelord” I mean… “dragon” persona. And, honestly, I really love how much work Colfer put into fleshing out the backstory of dragons, as well as their mechanisms. Bravo!
Squib is a really likeable character (if you take out all of the objectifying of women that apparently characterizes the Southern United States.) He’s like…guys he’s literally Donkey. Vern is literally Shrek. I…I don’t know how to write this review. Colfer managed to write both characters with a lot of rough traits, but just enough likeable ones that every reader will appreciate the diamonds at their core.
So, the plot isn’t bad. But, the most enjoyable part is the beginning where Squib and Verb bond. And that ends all too abruptly with the climax, which basically lasts the final two-fifths of the book…and it’s just tons of action and violence. So I’d want some better pacing. This is one of those longer books that you could probably summarize in fifteen seconds.
I don’t think I’m super into that. I also don’t think the sense of humor is my cup of tea; it’s pretty crass. Keep that in mind if you’re going to read it.
But…Shrek as a dragon. Think about it. This book’s got layers.
